Miami FC returns to USL Championship action Saturday night as the club travels to Trinity Health Stadium to face Hartford Athletic.
Saturday’s match marks Miami’s second road contest in four days after Wednesday night’s USL Cup Quarterfinal against San Antonio FC at Toyota Field. Miami’s Cup run came to an end with a 2-1 defeat, and the group now turns its full attention back to the USL Championship.
Despite falling two goals behind in San Antonio, Miami continued to push late into the match. Arney Rocha pulled one back in the 79th minute after combining with Diego Mello, and Miami created several opportunities in the closing stages in search of an equalizer. Daltyn Knutson came close to forcing extra time with a header in stoppage time, but San Antonio goalkeeper Joseph Batrouni made the save to preserve the result.
Saturday presents a quick turnaround for Head Coach Gastón Maddoni’s side, which traveled directly from Texas to Connecticut ahead of its return to league play.
Miami will look to bounce back in the Championship after a 1-0 road defeat against Las Vegas Lights FC last weekend. Prior to that result, the club battled back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Eastern Conference leaders Detroit City FC at Pitbull Stadium.
With the USL Cup now behind them, Miami enters Saturday focused on picking up an important result on the road as the second half of the Championship season continues.
KNOW YOUR OPPONENT – HARTFORD ATHLETIC
Hartford Athletic returns home carrying momentum from a 4-2 victory over Charlotte Independence in Wednesday night’s USL Cup Quarterfinal, a result that sent the Connecticut side through to the Semifinals.
Hartford entered this year’s tournament as the defending USL Cup champion after capturing the first trophy in club history in 2025. Athletic completed an undefeated Cup run last season with a 1-0 victory over Sacramento Republic FC in the Final and has continued that success in the competition this year.
Led by Head Coach Brendan Burke, Hartford finished atop its USL Cup group this season after closing the group stage with three consecutive victories. Wednesday’s victory in Charlotte kept its title defense alive and gives the hosts a quick turnaround of their own before returning to Championship action against Miami.
Hartford has also shown its ability to compete with strong opposition in league play this season, combining an organized defensive approach with the ability to create danger in transition.
With both clubs coming off USL Cup Quarterfinal matches on Wednesday night, Saturday’s meeting presents a demanding turnaround for two sides returning their focus to the USL Championship.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Saturday will mark the second meeting between Miami FC and Hartford Athletic this season.
The clubs first met on April 4 at Pitbull Stadium, playing to a scoreless draw in a tightly contested match. Miami created several opportunities throughout the afternoon, while Eloy Room and the Miami back line helped keep Hartford off the scoresheet.
Miami nearly found the winner late when Brandon Bent created an opportunity for Jürgen Locadia in stoppage time, but Hartford kept the match scoreless as the teams shared the points.
Now, more than four months later, the two sides meet again in Connecticut with important Championship points on the line.
