The Miami FC Grinds Out Hard-Fought 2-1 Victory Over Naples, Takes First Place

NAPELS, Fla. (June 15, 2019) – The Miami FC was on the road, Saturday night, for a crucial match against Naples United. Miami battled through inclement weather and a rough match to win 2-1 and take sole possession of first place in the NPSL Sunshine Conference.

The match opened with both sides playing stellar defense, keeping chances to a minimum.

Things picked up in the waning minutes of the first half. The Miami FC nearly took the lead in the 37th minute as Brian James played a great ball over the top to a streaking Mohamed Thiaw but Thiaw was called offside.

Within seconds, Naples hit back with a quick counterattack and scored to take a 1-0 lead.

Just before the halftime whistle blew, Miguel González tied the match up with a great finish after Thiaw won a 50-50 ball in the air and laid it off for him in point blank range.

The second half saw the Miami FC pick up the pace and apply pressure the rest of the night.

The Orange and Blue nearly took the lead in the 59th minute when Lloyd Sam fired in a low cross that just missed a diving Callum Chapman-Page right in front of goal.

Goalkeeper Mark Pais played hero in the 72nd when he came up with a crucial save on a close range shot to keep the score even.

After multiple near chances, The Miami FC finally broke through in the 79th minute. Fresh into the match, midfielder Ariel Martínez won a tackle in the midfield, starting a counterattack for the Orange and Blue.

He drove hard towards the center of the Naples box before playing a smooth trough ball to his left, finding González who fired the ball past the oncoming keeper, his 13th goal in the last six matches.

The rest of the match saw valiant defending by the entire Miami FC squad to secure the 2-1 victory.
