The Miami FC Opens 2019 Preseason With 4-0 Victory Over Orlando City B

Feb 17, 2019

ORLANDO, Fla. (February 17, 2019) - The Miami FC began its preseason preparations for the 2019 season with a friendly match against Orlando City B, beating the Central Florida squad 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

It took a bit of time for both teams to feel each other out and find a rhythm on offense and defense.

The Orange and Blue fired the opening salvo in the 38th minute, getting help from a mental mistake by Orlando. A loose, wayward back pass among the Orlando backline was latched on to by Miami forward Miguel Gonzalez, who took a glance at goal and lofted his finish over the out-of-position goalkeeper to give Miami a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Two players who particularly stood out in the first half were new signings, defender Brenton Griffiths and midfielder Tomas Granitto. Both players were beacons of defensive solidity and calmness in possession. Granitto continually patrolled and controlled the middle of the pitch.

Miami made a litany of substitutions at halftime to fortify the formation and take control of the match.

The defensive intensity picked up during the latter half of the match, and it led to more scoring chances being created.

In the 73rd minute, forward Lloyd Sam snuck up on a defender who was too passive looking for the right option and won back in possession in the final third of the pitch. Sam quickly spotted midfielder Dylan Mares to his left and fed him, allowing Mares a clear scoring chance, which he took by pushing his finish into the right corner of the net.

Six minutes later, a clearance by Orlando's backline fell to right back Shawn Chin in the middle of the field. Chin quickly played the ball back into the box and found center back Callum Chapman-Page open at the top of the box. Chapman-Page controlled the ball with his thigh and caressed it onto his right foot, which he used to bury his shot into the bottom left corner of the net.

Miami capped off the match with its fourth goal in the 81st minute. Sam sprung himself into the box with the ball at his feet and created something out of nothing, finding a sliver of space to chip the ball over the goalkeeper and give Miami a resounding 4-0 victory.
