RECAP: The Miami FC 2 Beats Naples United, Moves Closer to Clinching Top Seed

Jul 3, 2018

MIAMI (July 3, 2018) - The Miami FC 2 hosted Naples United FC on Tuesday night, conquering Naples for the second week in a row with a 2-0 victory. Miami now occupies first place in the Sunshine Conference with one match left to play.

The Orange and Blue burst out of the gate, creating a clear goalscoring opportunity in the first minute of the match. Defender Rhett Bernstein got on the end of a cross into the opponent's box and laced a header across the middle of the box, where forward Darío Suárez gathered and let go of a shot that Naples' goalkeeper miraculously saved.

In the 44th minute, Naples' netminder came to the rescue once again to keep the match scoreless. Suárez unleashed a shot that took a wicked deflection, forcing the goalkeeper to parry at the last second with his left hand. The rebound fell to midfielder Ariel Martínez, who took a shot of his own that forced another acrobatic save from the goalkeeper.

Miami would finally break through in the final minute of the half, when midfielder Dylan Mares sliced the Naples defense open with a precise through ball into Suárez' path. Suárez snuck his left-footed shot under Naples' goalkeeper, who had sprung off his line, to give Miami the lead right before the halftime whistle.

Miami FC 2 went into halftime with a one-goal advantage, though its insistence on maintaining offensive pressure throughout the entire first half should've seen the team go into the break with a bigger lead.

The Orange and Blue was nearly gifted a second goal in the 62nd minute, when a Naples error forced its goalkeeper to come way off his line and meet a surging Mares. The goalkeeper blocked Mares' run with a sliding tackle, but the ball fell to Suárez, who rounded the goalkeeper but was pushed off balance by a defender while shooting.

While the match the pace of the match slowed as the night got longer, Miami finally got its insurance goal two minutes into stoppage time.

Substitute Brian James launched a long ball forward for Jaime Chávez, who outsmuscled the last defender and gained control of the ball. Left one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Chávez danced around him and brought the ball onto his left foot, which he used to belt his shot into the top of the open net to put the match away.
