Profile: Ricardo Lopes
Goalkeeper Coach
Ricardo Lopez is a native of Petrópolis, a bucolic hillside city one hour away from downtown Rio de Janeiro. Born on the first day of 1958, Ricardo grew up admiring Pelé, a player he loves to this day because “he leads by example; he did, and still does, the best possible for soccer all over the world”.
Ricardo has won one Brazilian championship and 3 Rio de Janeiro tournaments. Although retired as a professional player since 1988, when he last played for the Miami Sharks of the A-League, Ricardo has been a goalkeeper or youth coach since.
For the last four years, Ricardo Lopez has been in charge of the goalkeepers in Florida for the United States Youth Soccer Association and also for the West Kendall Coalition for all age groups.
In 2006, Ricardo was in charge of training the goalkeepers for Miami FC, working alongside Chiquinho de Assis. In his free time, he likes to go to the beach and reminisce about his best soccer memory ever: when he won Taça Guanabara (the first round of the Rio de Janeiro’s championship) in 1983. He also loves go-karts and to eat stroganoff. Ricardo is married to Inez and they have two children: Pedro, 21 and Natália, 18.
