Anatomy of a Goal: Suárez Sends Miami to Regional Semifinal

Oct 3, 2018

In last year's NPSL Sunshine Conference Final, Jacksonville Armada FC visited top-seeded Miami FC 2 at Bobcat Field at St. Thomas University. An early goal from Miami was equalized by Jacksonville in the 28th minute, but Miami struck shortly after and never looked back.

Here is how the second goal, which wound up being the winner, went down.

Time of Goal: 33rd minute with the score at 1-1
Goalscorer: Darío Suárez
Assister: Tyler Polak
Other Contributors: Ariel Martínez, Dylan Mares

The play starts on Jacksonville's half of the field, where forward Kris Tyrpak gets dispossessed and the ball lands at midfielder Ariel Martínez's feet. Martínez ventures forward with the ball as two defenders begin to pressure him.

Martínez uses a downed Tyrpak as a shield to keep the trailing defender at bay and looks for a passing option. Midfielder Dylan Mares has made himself available in the middle of the field, hanging back and away from the Armada back line. Once Mares gets the ball, he quickly turns his body to determine his potential avenues for the next ball.

Mares takes his first touch with his right foot in order to push it into position for another quick touch. Mares turns and identifies left back Tyler Polak making a run down the wing and with his next touch, pushes a ball perfectly into Polak's path with his left foot.

As Polak gets ready to make a play, forward Darío Suárez slips away from Jacksonville's center backs, both of whom are too far behind the streaking striker. Polak hits a first-touch cross that lands right at the feet of Suárez, and Suárez buries his one-time effort to put Miami up by a goal in a crucial match.
